TIG Welding or Fiber Laser Welder? What I Learned Buying Machines for a Fab Shop
In late 2024, the production manager dropped a folder on my desk with a simple request: find out whether we should buy another TIG welding machine or make the leap to a fiber laser welder. We were losing skilled welders, and the work wasn't slowing down.
I'm not a welding engineer. I'm the office administrator for a 58-person metal fabrication shop near Shah Alam, Malaysia. With TIG, a lot of that cost depends on the welder's hands. With a fiber laser, more of the process is controlled by the machine itself.
That's the part that changed my thinking. In 2020, recommending a laser for a small fabrication shop would have felt unrealistic. By 2025, the technology is no longer exotic. The question is no longer "is laser welding real?" It's "who is actually behind the machine when it stops working?"
The Part No Brochure Tells You: Duty Cycle and Support
"Heavy duty" doesn't mean the metal housing is thick. It usually means the machine can hold its rated output over a long period without overheating or shutting down. But you can't verify that from a photo.
The first thing I started checking was duty cycle at real operating power. The second thing was support. A cheaper machine can look like a bargain until the laser source fails and the seller's technician is "coming next week" for a month. In production, downtime is not an inconvenience. Downtime is a penalty clause.

We ended up renting a replacement machine while ours sat in the maintenance bay. The rental cost more than the original savings. I had to stand in front of management and explain that my decision had cost us production time. Looking back, I should have asked about repair turnaround times before signing the purchase order. At the time, I didn't know that the dealer was better at consumables than capital equipment support. I learned that lesson the expensive way.
That experience changed how I evaluate any heavy duty laser welding machine. Now I ask for references, I check duty cycles, and I verify who provides service support and where they are located. The most reliable information often doesn't come from the salesman. It comes from the maintenance manager at another shop who has already lived with the machine for two years.
How We Made the Call
In the end, we didn't abandon TIG. We kept our existing TIG machines for repair work, thin materials, and jobs where the process still makes sense. But for our higher-volume production work, we recommended moving to a fiber laser welding system built around a serious, industrially proven laser source.

TIG isn't old technology, and fiber lasers aren't magic. What changed is the world around them. Operator skills are harder to find, production schedules are tighter, and the cost of being wrong is higher than it used to be. The machine you choose matters less than the process you're buying and the support you're locking into. That's the question every buyer should answer before comparing prices.
